A missile struck Abood's home in Gaza. In one second, everything changed. He was 26 years old — a medical student with dreams. The explosion scattered shrapnel across his entire body, fractured his skull, destroyed his face, took one of his eyes, and killed his younger brother right in front of him.

Today, Abood cannot eat, drink, or move freely on his own. He no longer recognizes himself in the mirror.

Doctors have already performed a bone graft from his leg to reconstruct his jaw, and skin grafts to cover parts of his face. But many more complex surgeries are still needed — surgeries that cost far more than his displaced, homeless family can afford.
